The Billy Wilder Blog-a-thon

A germ of an idea formed a couple of months back, when I did a blog commentary on Ace in the Hole. It grew a bit larger when I recently screened Sunset Boulevard for my wife. I am now reading Ed Sikov’s biography, so the time has come to announce filmscreed’s Billy Wilder Blog-a-thon, on March 1-4.

Is there a more natural choice for such an examination? Wilder’s fingerprints are all over American film, from Film Noir to the courtroom drama to the romantic comedy. In most of the genres he touched down in, his films became the template.

A few of my favorite bloggers have been invited to participate, but everyone is welcome. Just drop in and leave me a comment letting me know what you would like to blog about. For me, I think it’s time to revisit The Fortune Cookie….

Hope to see you there.

Jeff

Wow, Jeff, this seems like a natural. I hadn't seen Ace in the Hole in ages, and I snagged it off of TCM last week, so maybe that'd be a good one for me to write about. (I promise not to read your piece first and steal all the ideas!) But with Wilder, there's plenty to choose from. If I could find a copy, I'd even give Buddy Buddy a shot!

Count me in. My work and school schedule is threatening to get really ugly about then-- in all of February, as a matter of fact-- and Jim Emerson has a Thon in March I'm already committed to-- but I'll do my damndedest to make room for this one. Thanks for the invite!

Funny you should mention 'The Fortune Cookie' Jeff, I just watched that for the first time last year.

Great subject for a blog-a-thon.

Not only do I love the personal invite, but (can you believe it?) I've never seen a Billy Wilder Film! I looked at his Filmography and was floored at the important film he's made. I have yet to watch the Sunset Blvd. I bought at a garage sale this summer, and the copy of Ace In The Hole (The Big Carnival) I got for my birthday. needless to say, of course I'm in, but which film(s) is the real question! I think I just might watch one and plug yer thon then watch one or two more for the actual event! Blog-O-Thons are fantastic things aren't they?

I was going to say get on Andy horbal's list of upcoming blog-o-thons, but it seems you're already there. God! Blogging is serious business these days!

Billy Wilder is my favorite director. He's easily within the top 5 of all time and up there with anyone, yet he's so unknown compared to Welles, Ford, Capra and Hitchkock. He's responsible for two of his generation's best comedies and two of its darkest films with the definitive romance (Sabrina) and adventure pieces (Spirit of St Louis) sandwiched in between. I just read a book called conversations on billy wilder, by cameron crowe, which i reviewed briefly on my blog. it was great.

count me in to the blog-a-thon
